Wakefield lies at the heart of the City of Wakefield, a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England. Located by the River Calder, it had a population of 76,886 in 2001.

Wakefield was dubbed the "Merrie City" in the Middle Ages.

History
Toponymy
The name "Wakefield" is often said to derive from "Waca's field" - the field belonging to Waca. However, it is more likely to have evolved from Old English ''wacu'', meaning "a watch or wake", and ''feld'', an open field in which a wake was held.<ref>{{cite book |last=Reaney |first=P.H. |title=The origin of English place-names (corrected 3rd pr.) |year=1964 |publisher=Routledge and Kegan Paul |location=London |pages=pp. 161 |isbn=0-7100-2010-4</ref> In the Domesday Book of 1086, it was listed as Wachefeld.<ref>{{cite book |last=Mills |first=A.D. |title=A dictionary of English place-names (2nd ed.) |year=1998 |publisher=Oxford University Press |location=Oxford |pages=pp. 361 |isbn=0-19-280074-4</ref> also as Wachefelt.
