Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania|Allentown, Pennsylvania, Richman grew up recording songs using piano and guitar on a multi-track tape player.<ref>{{cite web

He attended George Washington University for one year before deciding to drop out in order to pursue a music career; his first EP was recorded in his GWU dorm and distributed by CD Baby. He then toured constantly to support himself, working his way from coffeehouses to festival dates, with 100 to 150 gigs a year, aggressively working the college programming circuit.<ref name="Schwartz">{{cite book
