Aesop Rock (born Ian Matthias Bavitz on May 11, 1976) is an United States|American hip hop music|hip hop artist. He was at the forefront of the new wave of underground hip-hop|underground acts that emerged during the late 1990s/early 2000s. He is signed to El-P's Definitive Jux label and is a current member of the The Weathermen (hip hop group)|Weathermen.

A Huntington, New York|Huntington, Long Island, New York-born MC, Aesop initially recorded and released two self-financed records, ''Music for Earthworms'' (1997), featuring underground hip-hop|underground legend Percee P on two tracks, and the ''Appleseed (EP)|Appleseed'' EP (1999), while also working as a waiter. After moving to the Mush (record label)|Mush record label|label, Aesop released his first major album, ''Float (Aesop Rock album)|Float'' (2000), with guest appearances from Vast Aire, Slug (rapper)|Slug, and Dose One. Production was split between Blockhead (music)|Blockhead and Aesop himself, with one track by Omega One.
