Butthole Surfers is an United States|American alternative rock Rock band|band formed by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary in San Antonio, Texas in 1981. The band has had numerous personnel changes, but the core lineup of Haynes, Leary, and drum kit|drummer King Coffey has been together since 1983. De Texaanse Butthole Surfers komen na een lange afwezigheid terug naar Europa in de originele line up en spelen één (1) Belgisch concert in Minnemeers, het 2de platform van NTGent waar Muziekclub Democrazy vanaf deze zomer op regelmatige basis concerten zal organiseren. Het optreden van the Butthole Surfers vindt plaats aan de vooravond van BoomBox (18-21 juli), de samenwerking van Democrazy en Boomtown tijdens de Gentse Feesten. Vanaf 12 september start de najaarsprogrammering in Minnemeers met een breed aanbod van muziekavonden (concerten en dj sets).
Butthole Surfers en Democrazy zijn exact even oud en hebben nogal wat gemeen: beide opgericht in 1981, gepokt en gemazeld in de punkrock, de noise en de psychedelica en met een levensloop met de nodige ups and downs. Spilfiguren van the Buttholes zijn zanger Paul Leary en gitarist Gibby Haines. Hun mengeling van zwarte humor, de experimenten met geluidsmanipulatie en tape editing en het gebruik van clichés uit metal en elektronica maakte hen tot 1 van de pioniers en de legendes van de Amerikaanse gitaarscene. Ze staan bovendien bekend omwille van hun spraakmakende en chaotische live shows, gevoed door een gezonde interesse in geestverrijkende middelen, een evidente invloed op hun sound en way of life.
Ondanks hun naam (we onthouden u de Nederlandse vertaling), attitude en imago slaagden ze er toch in om hits te maken: o.m. de zeer geslaagde Donovan-cover ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man’ en ‘Pepper’ (nummer 1 in Bilboard Hot 100). De cd ‘Electriclarryland’ uit 1996 haalde de gouden status. Tijdens deze tournee worden ze vergezeld door de studenten van the Paul Green School of Rock. Referentie is de Jack Black film ‘The school of Rock’, gebaseerd op hun echte verhaal. The School of Rock zal Butthole Surfers op het podium bijstaan. We zijn benieuwd.
