Career Born to Mary Moore and Melvin Hendrex Snr., Dorothy was raised by her great grandmother.<ref name="Soul">[http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Dorothy%20Moore.html Soulwalking.co.uk biography]</ref> She began singing with The New Stranger Home Baptist Church Choir at the age of five, and, eventually, she became a soloist.<ref name="Soul"/> While attending Jackson State University, she formed an all-female group called The Poppies (American band)|The Poppies<ref name="Soul"/> with Fern Kinney, Petsye McCune and Rosemary Taylor.
