Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 â€“ October 4, 1970) was an United States|American singer, songwriter, and music arranger, from Port Arthur, Texas. She rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist. Biography
Janis Joplin was born to Seth and Dorothy (nÃ©e East) Joplin;<ref name="scars">{{cite book|title=Scars of Sweet Paradise: The Life and Times of Janis Joplin|author=Echols, Alice|publisher=Henry Holt and Company|date=2000-02-15|isbn=0805053948</ref> her father was an engineer at Texaco, her mother, registrar at a business college. She had two younger siblings, Michael and Laura. The Joplins felt that Janis always needed more attention than their other children, with her mother stating, "She was unhappy and unsatisfied without [receiving a lot of attention].
