Joan Anita Barbara Armatrading (born December 9, 1950) is an England|English<ref>[http://www.houstonpress.com/2000-07-13/music/union-joan/ Houston - Music - Union Joan<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref> singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She achieved fame in the mid 1970s as a headlining musician who was also a solo performing woman of colour, a rarity at that time. Known for her distinctive low voice and intelligent, sensitive lyrics, Armatrading was a pioneer for other female artists and is a three times Grammy Award-nominee <ref name="Grammy"> [http://www.joanarmatrading.com/ Official Website]</ref>. Additional achievements include an MBE, and a BA (Hons) degree in History from the Open University, of which she is a trustee <ref name="MBEOU"> [http://www.joanarmatrading.com/ Official Website]</ref>.
Early life
Armatrading was born in Basseterre, Saint Kitts in the West Indies and moved with her family to Birmingham, England, in 1957. Armatrading began writing lyrics and music at the age of 14. Her first job was working at Rabone Chesterman (makers of fine engineering tools), in Hockley, Birmingham. She was sacked from this job because she insisted on bringing her guitar to work and playing during tea breaks<ref>BBC R1 interview with Janice Long</ref>.

Agents for artists signed with major labels can contact the Festival in the usual manner. Only digital submissions are accepted for Pyramid, Other and John Peel stages. Please do not send in CDs.
For Acoustic Stage please send CDs to Glastonbury Acoustic Stage, Asgard, 125 Parkway, Regents Park, London, NW1 7PS and for Dance Village - CDs to Glastonbury Dance Village, P O Box 1132, Bristol, BS99 2JZ or EPKs to the usual address.
For other peformers, the Festival is again running the Glastonbury New Talent Competition. Over 50 performers or groups that entered the competition last year played at Glastonbury 2007, with the winner, Liz Green, having a spot on the Pyramid Stage.
