Leonard Norman Cohen Order of Canada|CC National Order of Quebec|GOQ (born September 21, 1934 in Westmount, Quebec|Westmount, Quebec) is a Canada|Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist. Cohen published his first book of poetry in Montreal in 1956 and his first novel in 1963.

Cohen's earliest songs (many of which appeared on the 1967 album ''Songs of Leonard Cohen'') were rooted in European folk music melody|melodies{{Fact|date=March 2008 and instrumentation. In the 1970s his music encompassed popular music|pop, cabaret and world music. Since the 1980s his high baritone voice he has typically evolved into lower registers (bass baritone and Bass (vocal range)|bass), with accompaniment from electronic synthesizers and female backing singers.

His work often explores the themes of religion, Solitude|isolation, Human sexuality|sexuality, and complex interpersonal relationships.

Cohen's songs and poetry have influenced many other singer-songwriters, and more than a thousand renditions of his work have been recorded. He has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour.     Daags na zijn opname in de befaamde Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, kondigt de 73-jarige Canadese singer songwriter Leonard Cohen zijn eerste, langverhoopte live tournee sinds vijftien jaar aan. Kick-off van de toer is begin juni in thuisland Canada en vandaar uit vertrekt hij richting Europa, waar hij op donderdag 10 juli, de vooravond van het Cactusfestival, het Brugse Minnewaterpark aandoet.

    Cohen is ongetwijfeld één van de belangrijkste en invloedrijkste songwriters van de laatste decennia. Van oorsprong eigenlijk dichter, richtte hij zich in de late jaren '60 op zijn muzikale carrière. De albums 'Songs Of Leonard Cohen' en 'Songs Of Love And Hate' leverden hem meteen een cultstatus in het folk pop circuit op. Later uitgebracht werk als 'I'm Your Man' (1990), 'The Future' (1992), 'Ten New Songs' (2001) en 'Dear Heather' (2004) herbevestigen zijn status en worden alom als klassiekers beschouwd. Nummers als 'Suzanne', 'Hallelujah' en 'So long Marianne' behoren niet enkel tot het collectieve geheugen van elke muziekliefhebber, ook muzikale grootheden liggen deze nummers na aan het hart. Getuige daarvan zijn de naar schatting 1300 covers die van zijn werk gemaakt zijn, waarvan Jeff Buckley's vertolking van 'Hallelujah' en Judy Collins' 'Suzanne' enkele van de bekendsten zijn. Ook REM, Sting, Martha & Rufus Wainwright, Anthony en Nick Cave zijn grote liefhebbers van Cohen's oeuvre.

    Momenteel werkt Leonard Cohen aan een nieuw album, dat later dit jaar zal verschijnen.
