Early career and top-ten success
Her first TV appearance was on a talent show in the Granada TV area in 1982. She won the show singing the Human League track The Things That Dreams Are Made Of. The show was produced by the then Head Of Light Entertainment at Granada TV, ''Johnny Hamp''.
After releasing several unsuccessful single (music)|singles in her mid-teens (she also co-hosted a Children's Television|TV pop music|pop show at this time, ''Razzmatazz'' with Alistair Pirrie), she became a major international celebrity|star (as well as Razzmatazz, Stansfield can be seen in 1983 children's television show ''The Krankies Klub'', alongside comedian Jimmy Cricket and pop rock band Rocky Sharpe|Rocky Sharpe and the Replays), still keeping her thick Heywood-ian (Rochdale) accent; in reference to the latter and to her working-class background (and likely in tribute to all she had managed to accomplish), Shaun Ryder from Happy Mondays once said that Stansfield's family "makes mine look posh".{{Fact|date=June 2008 Some people think as she comes from Rochdale that she is related to Gracie Fields (whose real name was Grace Stansfield).{{Fact|date=June 2008 This is in fact untrue.
