Biography
Growing up in Lovejoy, Georgia,<ref>Park, Eunnie. "Talking to: Michael Tolcher", ''The Record (Bergen County)|The Record'', 2004-05-03, p. F2.</ref> Tolcher, who has played guitar from a young age and wrote his first song at age five, got his vocal start in his church choir. As a teen, he was training to be an Olympic runner. He was part of the track team at the Georgia Institute of Technology but an injury prevented him from continuing. He returned to music and became involved in performances at, and broadcasts to, the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, where his father was chaplain. At the prison, Tolcher met political activist Mutulu Shakur, who encouraged him to continue in a music career. Tolcher soon began touring in small venues around the country. Eventually arriving in New York City, he recorded his album ''I Am (Michael Tolcher album)|I Am'' with producers Pop Rox in late 2003. It was released on Octone Records in 2004, and he toured as opening act for such artists as Michelle Branch, Maroon 5, Virginia Coalition, Pat McGee Band, Everclear (band)|Everclear, The Clarks, Hanson (band)|Hanson, Sister Hazel and Gavin DeGra... read all
