Porcupine Tree are a progressive rock band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. Their music is a combination of Rock music|rock, psychedelic music|psychedelia, and heavy metal music|metal.

During the nineties the band focused mainly on psychedelic rock although they incorporated a wide range of styles of electronic music, from trance music|trance to krautrock and Ambient music|ambient due to Steven Wilson and Richard Barbieri's liking for the Kosmische Musik scene of the early 70's, led by bands such as Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Can (band)|Can<ref name="Aural Innovations Issue #7">{{cite web|url =http://www.aural-innovations.com/issues/issue7/ptree03.html|title =Porcupine Tree (Review/Interview)|publisher=Aural Innovations| accessdate =2007-01-07</ref>.
Since the release of ''Lightbulb Sun'', the band eventually started Musical tuning|tuning their guitars down which resulted in a shift to a more heavy metal music|metal sound. Their most recent full-length studio album, ''Fear of a Blank Planet'', released in April 2007, contains some of the heaviest Porcupine Tree music to date. The latest EP, ''Nil Recurring'', also follows in the new heavier direction yet adds even more industrial elements.
