The band is named after the nearby town of Portishead, Somerset|the same name, {{convert|13|km|mi|0|abbr=on<ref>[http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.46513,-2.684784&spn=0.096249,0.251999&z=12 Portishead and Bristol] on Google Maps</ref> west of Bristol.

History
The band was formed in Bristol in 1991, by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley.
