The Darkness were a multi-BRIT Awards|BRIT Award-winning United Kingdom|British hard rock and classic metal band. Their highly retro style of music was influenced by rock (music)|rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Queen (band)|Queen, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, Sparks (band)|Sparks, Van Halen, T. Rex (band)|T. Rex, Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy. They were best known for the soaring falsetto of their lead singer Justin Hawkins, whose departure in 2006 resulted in the dissolution of the band.
Originally started in 1991 from Kirkley High School, Lowestoft in Suffolk, brothers Justin Hawkins (lead vocals|vocals and rhythm guitar|guitar) and Dan Hawkins (musician)|Dan Hawkins (lead guitar|guitar and backing vocals|vocals) found themselves in London where they met up with childhood friends, Frankie Poullain (bass guitar and backing vocals|vocals) and Ed Graham (drum kit|drums and percussion), and thus The Darkness was formed. Dan initially saw his brother's potential of being a frontman after Justin did an impressive recreation of Queen (band)|Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" at a New Year's Eve party in 1999, thrown by Justin and Dan's aunt in her pub The Swan at Gillingham just over the River Waveney in Norfolk, despite the fact that Justin was only miming to the original song.
