The Flaming Lips (formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma|Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1983) is an United States|American Rock music|rock band.
The band is known for their lush, multi-layered, psychedelic rock|psychedelic arrangements, space rock|spacey lyrics and bizarre song and album titles (e.g "Pilot Can at the Queer of God", "Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber)" and ''Yeah, I Know It's a Drag... But Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical''). They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which feature costumes, balloons, puppets, Digital projection|video projections, complex stage light configurations, giant hands, large amounts of confetti, and frontman Wayne Coyne's signature man-sized plastic bubble, in which he traverses the audience. In 2002, Q (magazine)|''Q'' magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die".
The group recorded several albums and Extended play|EPs on an indie label in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Bros. VH1 pays homage to legendary British rock band The Who in the network's third annual "VH1 Rock Honors" celebration of artists who now represent the pinnacle of rock music. As a result of The Who's revolutionary and era-defining influence on rock music, this will be the first "VH1 Rock Honors" that salutes just one band. Tune in Thursday, July 17 at 9pm on VH1 and watch performances from The Who and tribute bands Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and The Flaming Lips. 8. The Flaming Lips at Tivoli, Plænen, Copenhagen on 8 Aug 2008
BELSONIC, located in Custom House Square in Belfast, and running from 11th – 16th August, will comprise a series of one-day, large scale out-door events, delivering all the atmosphere of a music festival in the most urban and convenient of settings, and presenting an unprecedented opportunity for a Northern Irish audience to get this close to some of the worlds’ largest artists, while basking in this warmth of this bespoke location.
BELSONIC's opening night will feature a headline performance from multi Platinum selling, and Grammy Award winning, U.S. alternative rock band THE FLAMING LIPS, considered by many to be the highlight of 2006's Electric Picnic Festival, and cited by Q Magazine as 'Of Of The 50 Bands To See Before You Die'. Supported by Oppenheimer, Jape and Mogwai.
The Enemy supported by Reverend and the Makers, Fighting with Wire , Future of the Left and General Fiasco will play at Belsonic on Thursday 14th August 08.
August 15th's lineup will be headlined by THE ZUTONS. Self styled as “Liverpool's first great band of the 21st century”, The Zutons' boisterous, hook-laden music has scored them a string of hit singles. They will be supported by The Go! Team, The Mystery Jets, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Delorentos and Skibunny.
