The New Pornographers are a Canada|Canadian indie rock supergroup formed in 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Their sound is highly influenced by such power pop bands as The Cars and Cheap Trick, although their songs are generally of a greater melodic and harmonic complexity. Carl Newman, who writes most of the band's material, has said, "When I seriously started to try to write songs, my main influences were, like, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, and Brian Wilson. Those were the guys I kinda looked at their music and went, 'What the hell are they doing here?' Newman from Cokemachineglow.com]</ref> The melody of the first and eponymous track on their second album ''Electric Version'', for instance, begins with an arpeggio|arpeggiated diminished triad—a rare and strange opening flourish for a pop song.
The band's first three albums each ranked in the top 40 on ''The Village Voices Pazz & Jop year-end poll of hundreds of music reviewers. Het Boomtownfestival neemt dit jaar een sabbatjaar. Wie daar nog steeds om treurt kan zich laten troosten door het net uitgevonden BoomBox, een soort pocketversie van Boomtown maar dan droogjes binnen. Voor de gelegenheid slaat Boomtown de handen in mekaar met Democrazy. De Gentse muziekclub had zin om iets te organiseren tijdens de Gentse Feesten en is bovendien al een tijdje op zoek naar een goede locatie voor hun optredens. Die vonden ze in de Minnemeers (NTG2) en die zaal bleek toevallig ook beschikbaar tijdens de Gentse Feesten. BoomBox beperkt zich tot het eerste weekend van de Gentse Feesten, van vrijdag 18 t.e.m. maandag 21 juli en gaat voor een redelijk alternatieve, maar kwalitatieve affiche, met elke avond twee tot drie groepen en een hip dj-feestje achteraf. De tickets zullen democratisch geprijsd zijn.

The first annual ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL is set for August 8, 9 and 10, 2008. The three-day, multi-stage music and arts festival will take place at Liberty State Park in New Jersey--a historic location offering panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan skyline. The festival’s name is inspired by the area’s rich history, particularly Ellis Island and the NJ Central Railroad terminal located on the festival site, where many arriving immigrants boarded trains for ALL POINTS WEST.
Additional details regarding the line-up, ticketing and other information for ALL POINTS WEST will be announced in the coming weeks. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit “Friends of Liberty State Park.”

And we’re back! But where have we been? Truth be told, we’ve been squished in our Tardis, traversing the space time continuum in search of a bunch of iconic acts to camp out and celebrate THE GREAT ESCAPE in style.
We’ve leapt forward a few months, landing at Newington Armory on 4-5 October (Labour Day long weekend). The bands first crop of bands have been announced and tickets for THE GREAT ESCAPE 2008 - which include FREE ON-SITE CAMPING - go on sale 9AM JULY 9TH.
If you didn’t know already, The “Home Sweet Home” for our GREAT ESCAPE festival / sleepover, is Sydney’s best kept secret - the surreal playground and heritage listed Newington Armory. Built in 1897 and a former World War II naval armament, its gates serve as a closet leading into our very own Narnia. With 52 hectares of riverside, undulating hills, woodlands and ye olde buildings… there’s much to explore in the way of nooks and crannies - so get thy tents ready and rally thy posse for one dandy stroll!
In addition to this already magic set up, when you’ve plonked yourself before the main stage and are set to soak up the musique, the natural amphitheatre promises only the most perfect view and crisp sounds. Glorious!
