The Sugarhill Gang

The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip hop and funk group, known mostly for their biggest hit, "Rapper's Delight", the first hip hop music|hip hop single to become a Top 40 hit. The track uses the bass line from "Good Times (Chic song)|Good Times" by Chic (band)|Chic as its foundation.

The members, all from Englewood, NJ, called themselves Wonder Mike b.1959, Big Bank Hank b.1959, and Master Gee (musician)|Master Gee b.1961. They were assembled into a group by record producer|producer Sylvia Robinson who also founded Sugar Hill Records (rap)|Sugar Hill Records along with her husband, record mogul Joe Robinson.

History
This pioneering group inaugurated the history of recorded hip-hop with their single "Rapper's Delight", a multi-platinum seller and radio hit in 1979. The group was created to profit on a supposed novelty item. New Jersey-based producer and indie label owner Sylvia Robinson had become aware of the massive hip-hop block party|block parties occurring around the New York City area during the late '70s, so she gathered three locals from her town of Englewood, New Jersey|Englewood, New Jersey: Guy O'Brien, who was the original Master Gee; another local rapper, Michael Wright, who called himself Wonder Mic, and non-rapper Big Bank Hank. The vocalists were then teamed up with three session musicians, including future Living Colo... read all

Events for The Sugarhill Gang

The Sugarhill Gang will be playing at these Events
1. Bestival Reunion Tour on 24 May 2008
Location: 1a Camden High Street, Camden, London, NW1 7JE, United Kingdom

Having covered the length and breadth of the country with a triumphant series of parties that featured the likes of Ebony Bones and The Mystery Jets, Bestival’s Reunion Tour rolls into London to make its final stop for this year, at Koko on Saturday 24th May.

Guaranteed to bring our festival’s renowned spirit to the heart of Camden with head turning attractions that will include a knitting tent, Lost and Found giant scrabble, spoken word shenanigans, our usual fun and games and even Teepees, Rob da Bank has worked long and hard pulling a stunning line-up together for our last blow-out before the inaugural Camp Bestival gets underway in July.

Launching the tour’s last hurrah are Hip Hop innovators and bona fide legends, The Sugarhill Gang who will be getting in shape for their September set at Bestival with a showcase of beats, rhymes and flavour from the Old Skool, laying down some original flow.

Django Spears will be joining the parade, cooking up a storm with their natty take on recycling by rehashing classic tracks from the likes of 2 Unlimited and Whigfield and giving them a whole new lease of life. Bestival favourites Sombrero Sound System will be throwing down an eclectic blend of party favourites, before the inimitable Ulrich Schnauss - whose unabashed love for Bestival 2008 headliners My Bloody Valentine gives his shimmering electro soundscapes a unique edge - makes a welcome appearance with a truck full of lush melodies and wonky beats.

Bestival main man Rob da Bank will be getting behind the decks for one his legendary sets, warming things up for the delicately-rendered torch songs of the hotly tipped Florence and the Machine whose haunting vocals and blues inflected Soul are a must see. The Bestival faithful will be no strangers to main stage favourites, The Cuban Brothers. Infamous for their high-octane funk and high-jinx, Miguel, Archerio, Clemente and Kengo are the very essence of entertainment and will be bringing a welcome touch of Latino loving to the evening.

Das Pop will be bringing proceedings to a close with their blissful, guitar driven pop. Championed by Justice, and with a Soulwax produced album due this summer, Das Pop are definitely ones to watch.

With tickets for Camp Bestival and Bestival literally flying out of the door, you’ll have to be quick off the mark to ensure you have a spectacular summer indulging yourself in our carnival of colour, fancy dress and tea & cake!
2. Bestival on 5 Sep 2008
Location: Newport, United Kingdom

Bestival is an award winning 3 day boutique music festival set at Robin Hill - a beautiful leafy country park (a veritable Garden of Eden!) near Downend and Newport in the heart of the Isle of Wight.

The wonderful world of Bestival was born out of ten fun years of pioneering music events and record releases from Rob da Bank's Sunday Best empire. The BBC Radio 1 leftfield DJ had a dream to one day create his vision of how the modern day festival should be. Along with Creative Director and wife Josie da Bank and co founders / partners John and Ziggy from Get Involved that dream is now fulfilled. On a mission to change the face of independent festival culture, the fearless foursome are bringing some magic to the shores of the Solent and spreading the love worldwide.

It's Rob and Josie da Bank's creative vision that sets Bestival apart. Whilst the massive musical brain of Rob ensures the Bestival line-up is the most eclectic you'll ever experience, it's Josie's creative wand that casts its magic over Bestival land. From the most original boutique campsite experience, to the Bollywood Cocktail Bar, fancy dress en mass and even a Hidden Disco, it's this uniqueness that makes Bestival a wondrous world of discovery and adventure that will inspire peace, love and dancing not only in September but all year round...

The first Bestival, in September 2004, was headlined by Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim, Zero 7, The Bees, Mylo and Lee 'Scratch' Perry and was a ground-breaking success.

Bestival 2005 meanwhile saw Royksopp, The Magic Numbers, Super Furry Animals, 2manydjs, The Go! Team and Soulwax take to the stage (amongst many others!). It also set the World Record for the Biggest Fancy Dress Party (10,000 people dressed as Cowboys & Indians!) and was voted (by the festival-going public) the Best (Medium-sized) Festival and the Most Innovative Festival at the 2005 UK Festival Awards. Many thanks to those who voted for us!

Bestival 2006 was headlined by Scissor Sisters, Gogol Bordello, Pet Shop Boys and a cast of thousands... you lot... and once again saw us coming up trumps by winning the Best Medium Sized Festival category at the 2006 UK Festival Awards
